By Antin. What is dandruff? Dandruff is excessive shedding of scalp skin, in the form of white flakes. The cause of dandruff is unclear, but the overgrowth of a yeast ( malassezia fungus formerly known as pityrosporum ) may be the reason for the faster turnover of the scalp skin.

Dandruff is not infectious not a serious disorder like skin cancer, and is not a sign of bad hygiene or unkempt hair. It is more of a cosmetic problem than a medical problem. Even though sometimes severe persistent dandruff may be a symptom of more serious conditions such as eczema, psoriasis or seborrhoeic dermatitis that need medical treatments.

What can you do to help control dandruff?
Before asking you doctor advise, you can help control dandruff by shampooing your hair regularly. Choose your medicated shampoo. Initially this should be done daily, and then every second day, reducing to once or twice weekly.

The response to medicated shampoos may vary, so you may need to try a number of products before finding the product that best suits you. If severe dandruff persisting after you try several dandruff products, consult your doctor.

For cosmetic reason, avoid wearing dark clothes while the dandruff is particularly bad.

Do stress or negative emotion playing parts in dandruff? Yes, stress and negative emotions have been known to play a significant part in skin conditions such as dandruff. Sometimes relaxation techniques also needed to control dandruff.

When should you seek medical advice?
Beside severe persistent dandruff after having tried a number of different medicated shampoos, there are some condition that make you should seek medical advise. If the scalp is particularly itchy, inflamed, or has sores or crusts on it please see your doctor. So, Be aware of your dandruff!
