Severe Dandruff-What Cause It?

By Antin.    Dandruff is due to the excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. The skin itself sheds every twenty-four days. Dandruff is an itchy, annoying and persistent skin disorder of the scalp. Mild cases may need nothing more than daily shampooing with a gentle cleanser. Some people, however, either chronically or as a result of certain triggers, experience an unusually large amount of flaking, which can also be accompanied by redness and irritation. Severe dandruff can cause by scalp psoriasis. Scalp Psoriasis commonly occurs on the back of the head however multiple areas of the scalp or the whole scalp may be affected. Scalp psoriasis is characterized by thick silvery white scales on patches of very red skin and can extend slightly beyond the hairline. Scalp psoriasis, despite being partially hidden by the hair is often a source of social embarrassment due to flaking of the scale and severe ‘dandruff’. Scalp psoriasis may be extremely itchy or on occasion have no itch symptoms. It can also cause temporary baldness on the affected areas. It is a common, chronic, inflammatory skin disease and is associated with increased risk of melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma.

Seborrheic dermatitis can also cause severe dandruff. Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by scaly, itchy red skin, skin flakes or dandruff, and yellow or white scales that may attach to the hair shaft. The cause of this disorder is unknown but it appears to be inherited and an excessively oily skin (seborrhea) is one of the factors involved in this disease. The risk of contracting seborrheic dermatitis increases with stress, infrequent shampoos, obesity, and at times other skin disorders.

“Seborrheic dermatitis predominately affects the scalp but can occur between folds of skin and on skin rich in oil glands. These include in and between your eyebrows, the sides of your nose and behind your ears, over your breastbone, your groin area, and sometimes your armpits. You may experience periods when your signs and symptoms improve alternating with times when they become worse.
