You can help control dandruff by shampooing your hair regularly with a medicated shampoo. There are several types of shampoos available from pharmacies to help treat the problem of dandruff.

1. Medicated shampoos
Medicated shampoo for dandruff containing zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide or coal tar. Ask your pharmacist help about which medicated shampoo to choose. Dandruff shampoos relieve the scaling and itching associated with dandruff, and slow the growth of skin.

If you choose coal tar-based products, it is important to use the accompanying rinse or conditioner to help remove the smell of coal tar. Avoid strong sunlight, because your scalp may be more susceptible to sunburn. Avoid sun exposure also decrease risk of aging process and cancer.Products that containing coal tar and selenium sulfide may stain, so ensure that the dandruff shampoo is thoroughly rinsed well.

2. Antifungal shampoos
Dandruff causing by malassezia fungus formerly known as pityrosporum needs antifungal shampoo. Ketoconazole shampoos and miconazole shampoos contain a broad-spectrum antifungal, which inhibits the growth of yeast and other fungal infections, providing relief for the scalp.

3. Keratolytic shampoos Sometimes kerayolytic agent such as salicylic acid is needed for Dandruff treatment. Keratolytic Shampoo use for loosing keratin in the outer skin cells and then exposing the new skin underneath after the outer skin cells are discarded

4. Supplements
For the best treatment of dandruff you can use the following supplements that may also help control dandruff:

  • flaxseed or evening primrose oil
  • multivitamins, including zinc
  • beta carotene.
