An Overview of ECZEMA
By Antin. Eczema is a common skin problem affecting many people, especially children. Other name of Eczema is Atopic Dermatitis. The symptom of eczema is swollen, scaly, red, and itchy skin which sometimes weeps. In fact atopic dermatitis can affect all areas of the skin. Eczema is most often found in skin at the back of the knees, front of the elbows and behind the ears. Atopic dermatitis also often occurs on the skin face and scalp in small children.
Cause of Eczema In some cases of eczema, it is a type of allergic reaction. Atopic Dermatitis often occurs in people who have asthma or suffer from hayfever. Genetic factor may play rule in cases of eczema that people in the same family may have similar problems. Actually there is no precise cause of eczema. In many people there is no direct relationship to causative factors of atopic dermatitis.
Common triggers of Eczema Many things can be triggers of atopic dermatitis such as extremes of temperature and irritation skin from products such as wool, synthetic clothing, soaps and strong detergents. Sometimes food allergy like cow’s milk and seafood is blamed for eczema. Parents of children with atopic dermatitis could experiment, by eliminating specific things from the child’s diet for a few weeks and then re-introducing them to see if they make a difference.
Complications associated with eczema The biggest problem of atopic dermatitis is the occurrence of infection in the affected skin. Bacterial infections usually due to scratching the skin. Sometimes children with eczema need to sleep with their hands bandaged to stop them scratching their skin. In People with atopic dermatitis can take Antihistamine tablets or syrup to reduce itching and avoid scratching.
